The FAQs: Everything You Want To Know in Black and White
Do you photograph weddings?
Regretfully, no. I specialize in contemporary portraiture. However, I do know lots of awesome wedding photographers, and I’m always happy to recommend them. Hop on over to the Contact Me form, fill in the blanks, click on the buttons, and put “Looking for a wedding photographer” in the comments box. I’ll contact you, and give you recommendations based upon your needs.
Do you take engagement portraits?
I sure do!
What kind of photography do you do?
Just abut anything except Wedding Photography. I specialize in Contemporary Portraiture. I create portraits of children, families, tweens, teens, seniors, singles, couples, generations, and headshots/personal branding. Click here, and scroll down to the video to see what I mean.
Do you shoot boudoir photography?
Absolutely. What’s more attractive than someone who’s comfortable in their own skin?! What’s more empowering than capturing that in a portrait?! And, for the record, I like to think of this genre as “body empowerment portraiture”.
Why don’t I see boudoir images on your website?
While all portraits are intimate in one way or another, boudoir (or body empowerment portraiture) is especially so. Clients have to give me permission to display their images. It’s their choice, and I honor it.
Do you do location photography?
Yup! Depending upon the location and travel requirements, there are some extra fees. If you have your heart set on a location shoot, we’ll figure it all out at the Design Consultation. The fees are due when you book your session date.
What do you charge?
The up-front Retaining Fee is $540. It includes a 60-minute Design Consultation appointment; on-going design collaboration right up through the portrait shoot; your 60-90 minute portrait session; Professional Hair and Makeup for one; and $250 credit towards your purchase of printed portraits. You pay the retaining fee when you book your portrait session.
You pay for your portraits at your Reveal Appointment, and you only buy the ones that you love. See below.
What kind of paperwork is involved?
Every client signs a Photography Contract that outlines my responsibilities, as well as theirs, when they book their session.
There is also a Model Release, which grants me permission to use the images from the session to promote my business. Clients have three options for the Model Release: grant full permission for all of the images; grant permission for selected images only; grant no permission for any images.
Most clients are thrilled to let me use their images because a) their portraits are that awesome and, b) my clients trust that I want the best for my business, which means using only awesome portraits.
What is a Reveal Appointment?
Only the best thing ever! Two to three weeks after your portrait session, you’ll return to the studio to find that I’ll have revealed the best of the best of your portraits. About 27 matted 8x10 images will be on the display wall for you to ooooh and aaaaaah over. Then, it’s your turn to choose…. 8x10s? An enlargement, or two? Both?!
What do prints cost?
I have both package and a la carte pricing. Every print that you purchase automatically comes with two complimentary digital negatives: one for you to make additional prints, and one for you to post on your favorite social media sites. Packages start at $900 and go up from there. A la carte images start at $175 and go up from there.
Here’s the important thing: You only buy what you LOVE. Let me say that again. YOU ONLY BUY WHAT YOU LOVE. You are under no obligation to buy anything. Ever. That’s a promise from me to you.
Fair warning: It’s my job to create portraits of you that will blow your mind. You’re gonna love all of them!
Can you create custom pieces?
Oh, yes! Custom sizes; Italian canvas (can we say “OMG!” ?!); the sky is practically the limit. We’ll discuss the possibilities at your Design Consultation, but you won’t make a decision, or place an order, until you see your finished portraits.
Wow! Those prices.....
I provide tremendous value and I’m worth it. Great portraits take more than a camera. They take technique, time, and trust. When you’re my client, you get my undivided attention and superior service. That’s another promise from me to you.
Remember me telling you that I create images that will blow your mind? The only way to create them is to build a relationship of trust with you. A relationship that allows you to completely relax in front of the camera, so that I can capture the real you. That’s why you and I will take the time and care to custom-design your portrait experience. By the time your session rolls around, we’ll be friends having fun, with the side benefit of awesome portraits.
What does the typical client spend with you?
*grinning* I have yet to have a "typical" client! Some buy a few portraits; some buy them all; still others go wild and buy large Italian canvases.
On average, though, most clients spend about $2,000. Remember: You only buy what you love, and you only make your decision after you've seen your portraits at your Reveal Session.
Have you had a portrait experience?
Yes! It was marvelous! (Look at this portrait! Isn't it amaaaaaaaazing?!!!!!) Afterwards, I had only two questions: "Why didn’t I do this sooner?!!!!!!" and "When can I do it again?!!!!!"
Do you do only digitals?
The only service that is all digital is a Personal Branding/Lifestyle session. The basic package costs $1,415 and includes 60-90minute Design Consultation appointment; on-going design collaboration right up to the portrait shoot; your 60-90 minute portrait session; Professional Hair and Makeup for one; two sets of digital negatives (one for print material; one for web) for five images of your choice; and a 3-year commercial use waiver. You pay the fee when you book your portrait session.
In all other respects, a Personal Branding/Lifestyle session is like a personal portrait session and subject to the same additional fees, if any.
Do you offer discounts?
I offer only one discount. I’m a Certified Military-Friendly business, and I offer a 15% discount off printed products to active and retired military personnel, and their spouses or partners. I have service members in my family, and this is my way of saying “Thank You”. Valid ID is required for discount.
Do you sell Gift Certificates?
Yes! Click here to go to the Gift Certificate page. You may purchase one in any amount, from $50 to $5,000, for anybody, including yourself.
What kinds of payment do you accept?
I accept cash, checks, credit/debit cards, and gift certificates purchased through my website.
I really want a portrait session with you, but I don’t have that kind of money right now. What do I do?
You save up for it. You ask others to purchase gift certificates for your birthday, your anniversary, the holidays, and “just ‘cuz, dammit!”.
I know, from personal experience, that Love and Guilt do NOT go together. When you look at your gorgeous portraits, you want to feel nothing but joy. I want you to feel nothing but joy.
Save up your sheckels. You’re going to love how you feel about yourself when you do, and your portrait experience will feel even more amazing because of it.
How often do studio rules and pricing change?
Whenever I feel the need to change them.
However, when it comes to pricing, whatever pricing is in effect at the time you book your portrait session, is the pricing that will be applied at your Reveal Appointment.
What’s a Design Consultation?
The Design Consultation (or Design Consult) is where we plan out everything for your portrait session.
The consult takes place in my studio, in Quitman, GA. You get to see samples of my work; some of the products that I offer; and where we'll create your images. We’ll talk about your vision for your portraits, and book your session.
Now, the magic begins! We’re going to sit down for about an hour and discuss EVERYTHING! Hair... Makeup.... Wardrobe.... Poses.... Style.... Mood.... EV-ER-Y-THING.
The Design Consult is just the starting point. We continue to collaborate right up until the final image is in my camera.
After this initial consultation, I like to stay in touch via email, text, and Pinterest boards. By the time the day of your session arrives, everything is planned out, so that all you have to do is relax and have a marvelous time.
Who should attend the Design Consultation?
Everyone who is involved in your portrait session. The Design Consultation is the first point of education about the portrait process. Everything (from initial planning to your final order) goes much more smoothly when everyone has the same information at the same time.
What if the people involved are from out of town?
In the best of all worlds, everyone attends the Design Consult, in person. When that isn’t possible, we can use Skype or GoToMeeting to get everyone together online.
What if I don’t want Hair and Makeup?
Cool! That part of the retaining fee is added to your credit towards your print purchase. You’re that much closer to getting portraits that take your breath away!
What if more than one of us wants professionally styled Hair and Makeup?
Awesome! The fee per additional person is $140.
Do you have issues with orientation?
The only orientations I care about are portrait and landscape. How do you want to be addressed?
I have school-age children. Do you have special days for children’s portrait sessions?
Yes, I do. As the mom of four, I know how hard it can be to get everyone organized and in one place at the same time. I deliberately reserve most Saturday mornings and school holidays for portrait sessions that include children and teens.
Who do you consider to be a minor?
I have a pretty strict rule on this one:
IF THE PERSON IN QUESTION IS EITHER 18 YEARS OF AGE (OR YOUNGER) AND/OR IS STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL (OR IT’S VOCATIONAL EQUIVALENT), I CONSIDER THEM TO BE A MINOR.
That means that a parent or guardian must be present during all phases of the portrait experience, and must sign both the Photography Contract and the Model Release (if applicable). It also means that all communications must have the parent or guardian included in real time (group texting or group email).
Wait, wait, wait! You haven't answered MY question!
If you have a question that is not addressed here, please click here to fill out a “Contact Me” form and put your question in the comments box. I love to answer questions!
